Addressing Toxic Culture in Society: Policy Changes and Shifting Perceptions
Written by Miguel Santiago
Introduction
In contemporary society, toxic behaviours have woven themselves deep into the fabric of our cultures, manifesting mainly hyper-competitiveness, bullying, marginalisation, and intolerance. These prevalent issues must be dealt with thoughtfully, starting with comprehensive policy modifications and shifts in societal attitudes. This document will explore how to address these toxicity challenges and cultivate a healthier society.
The Profile of Toxic Culture
Toxic culture is a complex mesh of negative attitudes and behaviours, including discrimination based on race, gender, age, and social status; online trolling and cyberbullying; or subjugation and shaming of differing opinions. It fosters environments where individuals feel unheard, threatened, and demoralised, leading to severe emotional stress and decreased overall life satisfaction.
The Necessity of Policy Changes
Addressing toxic culture necessitates legal and administrative reforms. Policies must recognise and combat all forms of toxicity to foster an environment that dissuades harmful behaviours. These can include stricter laws against online harassment or workplace regulations that protect employees from undue pressure and bullying.
