Is it possible that our ceaseless scientific exploration could propel us into dark territories we’re not prepared to navigate? Our exceptional scientific capabilities have exponentially risen, but can we say the same about our ethical compass guiding these pursuits?

Let’s consider genetic engineering, more notably, human gene editing. Science has given us the power to alter the DNA of living organisms, presenting miraculous possibilities like eradicating genetic diseases and modifying organisms for better survival. However, this same power can yield horrific results in irresponsible hands. Are we sliding towards a future where ‘designer babies’ no longer remain in the realm of science fiction? Will social inequality be exacerbated if only the wealthy can afford to modify their offspring for enhanced capabilities genetically?

Another contentious area is the use of animals in scientific research. Yes, it has significantly contributed to advancements in our understanding of diseases, the development of medicines, and the testing of safety procedures. Nevertheless, this practice raises substantial ethical dilemmas. Millions of animals are subjected to pain and suffering in the name of science annually. Are we justified in conducting invasive experiments on sentient beings to benefit our species? How do we weigh the scales of human progress against the welfare of other living creatures?
